Collapsing New Buildings consists of construction wood and a double channel video installation, comprising two films produced in 2011 (Hamburg) and 2013 (Istanbul). The first one shows a construction site hidden behind a wooden fence, with a number of carefully placed holes for the passers-by to be able to view the progress. It is the construction site of an IKEA outlet in Hamburg in the Altona neighborhood, where many people with migrant backgrounds live. It is built in lieu of a 1960s shopping mall abandoned in the 1990s, occupied by artists, and eventually demolished by the government to make place for IKEA.

The second video shows a similar fenced construction site, this time in Istanbul, built within the ‘Taksim Pedestrianization Project’, which initially triggered the Gezi Park movement. This time we see randomly placed holes in the wooden wall panel, made by citizens – whose opinion about the project had never been considered – in order to be able to observe the on-going tunnel construction project. The installation that Öğrenci constructs in the exhibition space, stages a similar setting and invites the viewer to experience the passive act of observing. Collapsing New Buildings opens up a space to reconsider the active roles of the city’s residents that became highly visible throughout the Gezi Park resistance movement in Istanbul. At the same time this active role is contrasted with their pacified, muted observer role in the face of massive transformations of the public sphere.
